Google has many criteria for them to decide where to place you in their search engine. An important aspect is your site design. Of course they do not look at every site someone puts up everyday and then go back to it every time the site is updated. They have millions and millions of sites to keep track of.
They do it by using what is known as spiders and algorithms. The spider goes out automatically to sites it sees links to. Then it looks over the site and determines how original the content is, how up-to-date the links are, and how many other people link to the site from other sites. The more backlinks you have to your site, the more it determines how much others like your site. The spider is also able to determine how original the content is and how many visitors you get to your site each day.
